Some aspects of SEO, such as researching keywords or incorporating them into your content, can be quite simple and straightforward. With some time and dedication, any business owner can learn the basics. Understanding the basics, however, doesn’t necessarily result in a successful SEO strategy. Considering the sheer number of factors Google’s algorithms take into account, developing a truly effective strategy requires a deep understanding of how these factors affect the outcome or they require an often costly subscription to software that does it for you.


SEO isn't static, the digital landscape is always changing and the algorithms that dictate SEO are no different. Google is continually updating its algorithms to improve user experience, meaning strategies that were effective last month might not work today. Keeping up with these changes requires constant vigilance and a continual review of how your material is performing versus your competition.

It's a critical step in the SEO process as it helps businesses understand the language used by their audience and can inform your content strategy also.

So, how do you discover the most effective keywords for your business? Here are steps to guide you:


Identify Your Niche: Understand what your business and your industry is all about and what attracts online traffic to businesses such as yours, in other words, your competitors. Look at which keywords your competitors are ranking for. This can generate new keyword ideas and provide insights into the strategies that are working for others in your industry.


Understand Your Audience: On the back of understanding your industry, get into the minds of your customers. What problems are they trying to solve? What words or phrases might they use to search for solutions?

So is SEO Easy Then?


So, is SEO easy? Yes and no, I know, I hate that answer too, but in this instance it’s quite true. The basics are accessible to most people and there are lots of tutorials and how-to’s available online. Crafting and executing a comprehensive strategy that drives real, sustainable growth can be challenging and time-consuming though and as proof of this, how many of the tutorials telling you how to do it actually rank highly? It's not an impossible job for a business owner, but the expertise and knowledge of a professional can undeniably yield quicker, more effective results.

While gaining a basic understanding of SEO is important for any business owner, true expertise can supercharge your results. Recognising when to hand over the reins to someone else can be just as crucial as understanding SEO itself.

But, what does it cost? SEO costs can vary widely, depending on whether you choose to do it yourself or hire an agency and the scope of your strategy. If you opt to go the DIY route, your main investment will be in time and learning. There are many SEO keyword tools which are free or affordable and will help with keyword research, competitive analysis, link building and some analytics. These may cost anywhere from free to £20 to £100 per month depending on your needs.


Hiring a specific SEO agency on the other hand, might cost anywhere from £500 to £5000 a month, depending on the agency's size, the services they offer and the complexity of your needs. This might seem steep, but remember, effective SEO can lead to significant increases in traffic, conversions and in turn revenue.


The cost of SEO for SME’s is not insignificant; however, neither is the potential revenue that can be generated. Businesses appearing on the first page of Google are perceived as more trustworthy, leading to a higher chance of attracting and converting visitors.
